Khuli Khirkee is a shared co-working space for makers, movers and do-ers engaged in the performing arts. Located in Khirkee Extension in South Delhi, this three-storey building is used by professionals who wish to create an accessible space dedicated to their diverse interests as choreographers, theatre makers, dancers, movement enthusiasts, actors, light designers, musicians, and filmmakers.
This call invites proposals from individual artists who draw from and are exploring movement practices or body-based practices in the fields of dance, choreography, performance–traditional and/or contemporary–to investigate their forms over a period of 45-60 days in New Delhi. The artist must be a resident of the North Eastern Region (NER) of India comprising Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura.
About the Programme
This programme is imagined as an open space that invites one artist-in-residence for the year 2022 to build a structure for their own residency. The artist-in-residence is welcome to experiment with performance-making, fearlessly express themselves in their present capacity, challenge existing vocabularies, frameworks and disciplinary boundaries, rupture binaries of theory and practice as well as engage with performance as a medium for liminal social engagement. The structure of the residency is imagined as responsive; one that emerges directly from a dialogue with the resident and the specific needs of their artistic pursuit.
The residency will be held together by the community of artists that form Khuli Khirkee. Their practices are as diverse as dance, theatre, performance art, community theatre, somatics, lighting design, visual art, music, drama therapy, writing and film. The community is committed to acting as peers, mentor(s) or outside eye and/or provide suggestions, guidance and assistance as per the needs of the artist-in-residence. The artist-in-residence is encouraged to do two in-progress sharings of their work with the Khuli Khirkee community through the course of the residency and a final work-in-progress sharing, which will be open to the public. The residency does not demand for a full and final piece of work to be arrived at.
GRANT VALUE
The grant amount is Indian Rupees 1,50,000.00 (One Lakh Fifty Thousand only) for a residency period of 45-60 days. This is inclusive of all expenses related to travel (flight/train to and from Delhi), accommodation, food, healthcare, production, marketing, honorarium and daily allowance.
Eligibility
Artists who are Indian passport-holders residing in the North Eastern Region (NER) of India comprising Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura only.
Emerging performing artists from communities that are historically and structurally marginalised on account of their social location vis-a-vis but not limited to caste, class, gender, race, merit, economic status, sexuality, religion and ability.
Emerging performance-makers who draw from and are exploring movement practices of the body; traditional and/or contemporary, to investigate their forms through their expressive interdisciplinary process.
Applicants over 21 and under 40 years of age as of 1st January 2022 who have already implemented some or at least one artistic project of their own that has had public viewing.
Applicants who are available to be in Delhi for the entire duration of the residency.
Applicants who are willing to design the residency structure that responds to their own needs as performance-makers.

Submit your proposal in written (less than 500 words), audio or video format including a brief statement of purpose, conceptual note or idea for the new performance work and a few links to your previous work. We request you to send the proposal in English, Hindi or your vernacular language, whichever is your preferred mode of communication.
The initial selection process of choosing ten most eligible candidates will be done by Khuli Khirkee through review of all proposals by the community, mutual discussions and a voting system.

KHULI KHIRKEE is committed to ensuring that the resident artist has full freedom to explore their artistic project within the scope of the constitution and the legal framework of India that allows anybody the full freedom of expression irrespective of their caste, faith, gender, ability, class, language and ethnic demography. However, the KK community reserves the right to intervene in the process of performance making by the resident if any aspect of the project produces hate speech, remarks or gestures of a discriminatory nature with an aim to build a propaganda (directly or indirectly). An open conversation between all three parties (resident, KK and IIF) will ensue if such a situation arises to be able to reimagine the journey ahead.
