The Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation/Charles Wallace India Award 2012

April -June 2012
The call for applications for the Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation/Charles Wallace India Trust Award for 2011 is now open.
Deadline for applications: 28 November 2011.

The Charles Wallace India Trust and Gasworks has an ongoing partnership to offer a fully funded three month residency for an artist based in India to come to the UK. This year, they will be joined by The Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation, as joint partners.

The residency comprises:

  • Accommodation and living expenses in London
  • A private studio at Gasworks
  • An artist's talk and Open Studio, or similar public presentations, at Gasworks
  • Administrative, pastoral and curatorial support from Gasworks.

This residency focuses on professional development, artistic exchange and the development of artistic process. The support, networks and creative environments that Gasworks can offer will provide the artist with the means to research and experiment with new work, taking an important step in an international context.

This residency is open to emerging and mid-career artists, under the age of 40, based in India. The selected artist should be in a strong position to make an enthusiastic, discursive and speculative engagement with both the studio environments and London's wider artistic and cultural context.

The residency is scheduled to take place during April-June 2012.

Please read this before applying.
Selection and eligibility

The residency is open to contemporary artists working in all disciplines, however one must note the restricted facilities. Emerging and mid career artists involved in high quality art practice who have not had the opportunity to work in London before are prioritised.

Applying artists may wish to follow a specific research interest, but should be prepared to be flexible. A project proposal outlining the intent for the residency period should be submitted.

Applying artists should have a good level of spoken English, and should feel comfortable engaging in artistic discussions in English.

A decision will be made in liaison with the Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation and the Charles Wallace India Trust. The artists will be notified by the end of December 2011.

Application procedure

We prefer digital applications in PDF format as, in nearly all cases, they are cheaper and less time-consuming both for the artist and for us to process. If your application requires more than one email in order to be delivered successfully due to the weight of the files, please send it via www.yousendit.com (or similar provider). Please note, there is a 10MB limit on each email sent to us.
There is no application form. Please read the information about Gasworks International Residency Programme carefully (linked above) and then please send:

  1. An artist's statement of not more than 250 words describing your practice and areas of interest as an artist.
  2. A minimum of 10 digital images of recent work with captions and a short description if necessary. Postal applications may include slides, CDs or DVD. Please do not send originals.
  3. A curriculum vitae.
  4. A project proposal in no more than 200 words, outlining any research or production plans you might have for the residency period.
  5. Any relevant documentation (e.g. articles or papers about the work or exhibitions, publications, etc).
  6. A letter of reference (this may come as a separate email directly from the referee, but it should be clearly marked in the subject line whom it concerns).
  7. A cover sheet with name, contact address, e-mail, telephone and fax numbers if available, plus confirmation that you will be available between October-December 2011 if selected.

Email applications should be sent to:
